Cancelling a mobile contract: minimum term and notice period
With a mobile contract, there are two numbers you should know: the minimum term and the notice period. Both are in your contract or in your provider’s terms.
Minimum term
This is the minimum time you have to keep the contract. 12 or 24 months used to be common, especially if a phone was included. Today, more and more providers do without one. Cancelling before the minimum term ends can be expensive.
Notice period
This is how far in advance you have to cancel before the contract ends. In Switzerland, 2 months to the end of a month is widespread. Some providers have 30 days, others 3 months. If you miss the deadline, depending on the provider you keep paying until the next possible date or even pay a fee.
How to go about it
- Check your contract or customer account: when does the minimum term end, and which notice period applies?
- Keeping your number? Then register the number with your new provider. They take care of the transfer. The notice period with your old provider still applies.
- Cancel the way your provider requires: in your customer account, by letter or by phone. Ask for confirmation of the cancellation.
- Note the date: when do you have to cancel by? That’s exactly what’s easiest to forget.
Never forget again
In ANU Subs, you enter the contract term and notice period for your mobile contract, for example paying monthly with a 24-month term. The app works out when you have to cancel by and reminds you in good time. Templates for Swisscom, Sunrise, Salt and other providers are already included.
